Beautiful Island Park is so named because it is located on two islands in the Rock River. Anglers often line the river’s shore at Island Park in the summer, catching Northern Pike, walleye, catfish, bullheads, blue gills and small-mouth bass.
The city’s swimming pool features zero-depth entrance, play amenities, two diving boards, two water slides and lap lanes. The bathhouse houses the admissions office, handicap-accessible rest rooms and showers and public rest rooms and showers for picnickers and campers in nearby Island Park.
For those interested in sleeping under the stars, there are 22 updated camper pads with electrical hookups at each site. Campers have access to showers and restrooms on the north side of the pool bathhouse.
For a unique camping experience, there are two cabins available to rent. Each handicap-accessible unit sleeps six and includes a kitchenette with hot and cold running water, microwave, refrigerator and air conditioning.
The park features three playground sites, fire rings for primitive cooking and picnic shelters.
For a different view of Island Park, hit the trail on foot or on bike. The 1.6-mile-long, 10-foot-wide trail begins east of the Depot Museum, crosses east over an abandoned railroad bridge, goes north along the east bank of the Rock River to the northeast corner of the park. The trail circles the east, north and west edges of what is known as Scout Island, crosses the low bridge, then continues along the top of a berm to playground and ends at the Depot Museum. From the pool the trail extends west and crosses Boone Street to the abandoned railroad right-of-way, then south on the railroad right-of-way to North 2nd Avenue.
The concrete trail is perfect for biking, a leisurely stroll or a heart-pounding run — with a view!
