The City of Rock Rapids has rules and regulations regarding the use of land and the construction of buildings within the city. Building Permits are required for new construction, additions to existing structures, accessory buildings, driveways, concrete patios and installation of fences.
Fillable forms and the Zoning Ordinance are provided below. Please submit completed forms to the city office for approval of your project, and contact the city office (712-472-2553) for any questions you may have. Taking these steps ensures that your plans are within the guidelines set forth by the city and provides the proper permits before beginning construction.
Below are links needed for construction project permits in Rock Rapids. Each permit needs to be completed and approved, with all necessary fees paid before construction begins.
Building permits require a diagram on the back page of the permit, which includes distances from lot lines and any other buildings on the lot. Without the diagram, the permit can not be approved.

SCHEDULE OF FEES PURSUANT TO ZONING AND SUBDIVISION REGULATIONS
Effective August 1, 2016
1) Building Permit Application: $2.00 per $1,000 of estimated project costs with $20 minimum and $1,000 maximum
2) Application for Variance, Appeal or Special Exception: $1.00 per $1,000 of estimated project costs with $40 minimum and $500 maximum
3) Application for Sign Permit: Replace only – $25 per sign; New or altered – $50 per sign
4) Application for Permit to Move Building or Structure: $10.00 per day
5) Rezoning Application: $200 or actual costs, whichever is greater
6) Minor Subdivision Plat: $100 or actual costs, whichever is greater
7) Major Subdivision Plat: $200 or actual costs, whichever is greater
